The feild day will commence with a discussion of best management techniques being applied to this young orchard. (In it's second year with 614 trees planted) Jeff Tombleson, Chestnut Enterprises BOP Ltd and a Director of The Chestnut Company of New Zealand Ltd, will lead discussions, which will include the following topics. Orchard management regimes to achieve a yield of 5000kg/ha within 10 years. Why tree sculpturing or bonsai pruning techniques are not compatible with commercial orcharding? Organic certification - Why all orchards should be working towards it? The need to form machinery cooperatives for mechanised harvesting. The need for growers to align themselves with a processing/fresh nut export organisation. The need for all growers to be members of the New Zealand Chestnut Council. The need to form and participate in grower discussion groups. Any other topics that participants may wish to raise. If you are a weekend warrior and want to spend more time with family, friends, etc AND want to spend less time in the orchard AND want to increase orchard profitability OR are just considering CHESTNUTS - this feild day is a must. See you there........ Craig Cameron.
